Global Star Party TRIATHLON

by Gary

What can we do differently on Global Star Party 2016? The Manila Street Astronomers already conducts free telescope viewings twice a month from October to May (during the First Quarter and the Full Moon). So what difference would another free telescope viewing (FTV) make? The answer we came up with is simple. If there's a Messier Marathon, why shouldn't there be a FTV Marathon? Let's make this year's Global Star Party, a TRIATHLON. Instead of conducting a FTV just on the Global Star Party date itself, let's make it on three consecutive dates: pre, peri and post on April 15,... Read More...

Public Star Party, Los Angeles, CA, USA

The Los Angeles Astronomical Society held their monthly Public Star Party on the lawn of the Griffith Observatory on Saturday, April 16, 2016. From 2 PM to sunset, our members provided solar scopes for the public and demonstrated safety techniques for safe solar observing. After the sun set, our members focused their telescopes and biinoculars on other objects in the night sky. Due to windy conditions, observing the night sky was not at an optimum level but the star party was a success with the large crowd of over 1,500 visitors to the observatory. The star party ended at 9:45... Read More...

GAM2016 - Global Star Party Event in Linz (AUSTRIA)

Yesterday evening hundreds of visitors could catch a glimpse through our telescopes set up at the main square of Linz ( the hometown of the famous astronomer Johannes Kepler from 1612-1626 ). For most of them it was the first time look through a telescope for their life. Getting in contact by this way we could tell much about astronomy, about AWB and our local astronomical society ( LAG ) and observatory. I am sure we could enthuse many of them with astronomy. The first time sight of Jupiter and his moons and the look at the surface of the... Read More...

Neighborhood Global Star Party in Parsonsfield, Maine, USA

Both the astronomy clubs that I belong to didn't organize a star party for the same evening as the Global Star Party, so I did a neighboorhood star party in front of my house. There were only 3 people who came to look through the telescope, but all three of them were thrilled to see Jupiter with its bands and moons and the craters and mountains on the moon. Also, one of them and I took pictures through my telescope for the first time. We took a picture of Jupiter and the moon. Joan Chamberlin Parsonsfield, Maine, USA Read More...

Jupiter from Himalaya High Altitude Site

On my last night in the Himalayas i was finally able to get a little time to do some personal observations after the camp series had finished. Despite the wind and near freezing conditions i was able to capture nice images of Jupiter using double stacked 2x barlows, the I Nova PLAC2 camera attached to a 8' Celestron HD Edge and several blankets. These are wihtout question the highest resolution photos i have ever been able to manage. Post processing was completed with Registax and Gimp. Read More...

Astrotrek Astronomy and Science Camp, Himalayas, India

We have recently concluded a month long series of Astronomy Camps from our high altitude site (2300m) in the Himalayas. During this time we hosted student groups from Kolkata India and Lahore Pakistan. All in 60 students attended 3 consecutive camps held from late March to mid of April. Conditions at the campsite (Jungle Livinn Resort) are exceptional. This region is well known for its consistent clear skies and steady seeing conditions. Whilst the nearby township of Shimla (20km) has some resulting light pollution the views to the north, east and west are truly dark. Our set up is 3... Read More...

First month of AWB in Spanish!

"Astrónomos sin Fronteras", the social network for AWB fans in Spanish, started one month ago today. And as I write this, I wait for our 1,000th friend to "like" us! We had a lot: observational alerts and tips, ideas for "Global Astronomy Month" and a good share of photos from friends, newer and older. The dark sky was a theme this past week, and even a little humor, like the "postcard" you can see here in English version. And more... Many thanks are due to Fernando Roquel Torres from Puerto Rico, and Victoriano Canales Cerdá from Spain, who kindly agreed... Read More...

360 Degree Full-Sphere Astrophotos

Recently a new camera hit the market that will set off a small revolution in astronomy and astrophotography. It is an innovative panorama camera that records a 360 degree full-sphere panorama with only one single shot. We tested the Theta S for astronomical usage and it turned out quite well. The sample image above captured the atmosphere of an observing session on april 2, 2016, at a wind farm near Vienna. Just click the image to start the player. View the sphere full screen, pan around, zoom in and out, let it autorotate... What's more, the full-sphere camera can be... Read More...

Jupiter-Venus Conjunction in Guyana

Last year, 2015, I bought an astrograph telescope (254mm) online and other components recommended to go with it, including an EQ mount and photographic accessories. I've been actively imaging the night sky ever since; learning the field of astronomy and astrophotography. One of the things that fascinates me about the night sky is how wonderful it is, especially through a telescope that reveals all its glory and grandeur. The celestial objects are nothing less than a grand spectacular show, almost purposely display the need to be observed. During the Jupiter-Venus conjunction last year, I took my equipment out to our... Read More...
