Hello,

I will be in Finland with 3 friends to observe the Venus transit and we are looking for other poeple to observe it with. We are from Belgium and Austria and we can't take more than binoculars in the plane :( . We still don't know where we will observe it but in Lapland for sure.

Topic : M42 and the 90mm refractor

The new 90mm refractor arrived about a week ago and  we finally had the chance to observe with it. Earler in the evening it poured like a water fall and we thought that observing for the night was off. But the storm cleared out quickly and the skies opened to some of the best transparency I've seen for a long time. The primary target for the night was M42 - The Orion Nebula. We started with our 27mm Extra Flat Field eyepiece which gives the 90mm 34x. The nebula appears somewhat like a horseshoe in shape with the Trapizem barely split. Next we dropped in a 14mm Radian eyepiece boosting the power to 65x. Now the Trapizem is split into it's four componets and the nebula begins to reveal its grand appearence. But the real treat comes when we drop in the 6mm Radian giving the telescope 152x. The Trapizem is very well split and the nebula is displayed in breath taking detail. I can't recall ever seeing this much detail in the Orion Nebula with a 90mm telescope under light polluted skies, and I've been observing for more then 40 years.

AstroClock-Now

I developed this software for astronomers so that they could have a complete set of information all in one screen. Hope you find it useful!

Topic : Quick Session

I think its time this website gets active with sharing observing reports with it members. We can all benefit from reading what each of us has been observing and its fun to share the experience. Here's a report from December 3rd 2011 at the 90 Millimeter Observatory in Harleysville, PA, USA.

The night started out clear but cold, around 36 degrees F. I setup my 120mm refractor for a few quick views of Jupiter and a couple of deep sky objects. At 38x Jupiter and the four bright moons filled the eyepiece, I could see the North and South EQ bands and a little shading toward the North polar region. Dropping in my 9mm eyepiece (111x) the markings on the surface became a little more detailed but the seeing wasn't very good at this power.

Next I looked at the open cluster M35. At 38x this cluster is a awesome view. I counted over 75 stars most appeared blue or blue-white. All of a sudden the stars began to fade. A quick look at the sky and the clouds were rolling in. End of night.

Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes.

Clear Skies,

Dan

Hi, I'm from the Philippines and we will be witnessing a total lunar eclipse on December 10. I was just wondering if there are materials for the event, like publication materials (tarpaulin) and some handouts?

I am trying to organize a telescope viewing in my home university. Thank you

Topic : Skype Anyone?

Hi Mike and All,

I use Skype regularly to communicate with AWB friends in Brazil, Germany, and Nepal.  One of my Brazilian friends is even teaching me Portuguese using Skype.  Two of the astronomy clubs I belong to have hooked up with Marcelo Souza's club in Brazil.  Marcelo and his members showed us their observatory through Skype.  We also had a meeting between an astronomy person in Pennsylvanie and our club, so it is also good for doing sharing within country.

I will be in Nepal for GAM and I have already planned with my clubs to connect with the Nepal Astronomical Society while I am over there.  That should be a lot of fun and I know our clubs in Maine are looking forward to it.

I would be happy to connect with international clubs too as an individual, but for something to be arranged with one of the clubs, it would have to be organized ahead of time.  My Skype name is starladyjoan1  l

Is anyone using Skype to connect with other parts of the world?

I have been thinking about this for a while and would love to have  the oppertunity to be there when other countries are holding an Astronomy event. I would also be happy to have my events stream live to other countries. I guess all we have to do is announce it in the Discussion Forums, but under what category or where on the AWB website?

Lets all get to know eachother a little better, and the best way is to have a Live chat so we can see how other parts of the world are spreading our passion of the night sky.

At every  AWB event I hold, I tell my partisapants that it is a world wide event, and I think it would make it a little more impact if they could see another country streaming there live event at the same time as yours.

Comments?

Hi Alice, I can help you get a group of kids in the southern hemisphere.  Even one that's experienced on Skype!  What age?  Or does it matter?  I know a group in Brazil that does this but they're young adults.  But I think they can bring in a group of younger kids.  English might be a problem, though. We have some regular videocon people in Australia and New Zealand we can check with and see if they have a kids group to do this with.  They speak a form of English.    Mike Simmons
