The new 90mm refractor arrived about a week ago and we finally had the chance to observe with it. Earler in the evening it poured like a water fall and we thought that observing for the night was off. But the storm cleared out quickly and the skies opened to some of the best transparency I've seen for a long time. The primary target for the night was M42 - The Orion Nebula. We started with our 27mm Extra Flat Field eyepiece which gives the 90mm 34x. The nebula appears somewhat like a horseshoe in shape with the Trapizem barely split. Next we dropped in a 14mm Radian eyepiece boosting the power to 65x. Now the Trapizem is split into it's four componets and the nebula begins to reveal its grand appearence. But the real treat comes when we drop in the 6mm Radian giving the telescope 152x. The Trapizem is very well split and the nebula is displayed in breath taking detail. I can't recall ever seeing this much detail in the Orion Nebula with a 90mm telescope under light polluted skies, and I've been observing for more then 40 years. |
