Global Astronomy Month

Posted by Grace Wyatt in GAM2011 Report

Members of the Harford County Astronomical Society, Bel Air, MD, had planned to set up telescopes and binoculars for a public viewing session.   Since it was completely clouded out, we had indoor presentations and a tour of our observatory located at Harford Community College, Bel Air, MD.  Even though the weather precluded a viewing session, we still had 21 visitors for the night and 12 club members.   We gave out Sun Fact Sheets, Moon maps with moon fact sheets, NASA stickers, Kepler Bookmarks, Stereo Cards, EPOXI cards, Year of Solar System fact sheets, Citizen Scientist sheets and star charts.   We have a brief meteorite presentation that centered around how to identify a meteorite.   We also showed the movie "Journey to the Stars".   While touring the dome area of the observatory a presentation about telescopes and how they were work was also done.   Our program lasted a little more than 2 hours.

On April 17, 2011, from 11 AM to 4 PM members of Harford County Astronomical Society, Bel Air, MD had a display set up at a local Earth Day event.    Our focus for the day was Light Pollution and way to combat the issue.   We gave out Good Neighbor Lighting materials to adults and gave children light pollution coloring sheets as well as space stickers to remind them to turn off lights so we can see the night sky.   We also gave out Hubble lithos, Year of the Solar System information, comet bookmarks, EPOXI mission postcards, MESSENGER Mission stickers, NASA stickers and a club form with interesting astronomy websites and a pattern to make a planisphere.   We had an astrophotography display and eclipse glasses so visitors could safely take a look at the sun.   Children are so much fun with eclipse glasses.   The most common answer to "what does the sun look like with the eclipse glasses" is "it looks like the moon".   The number of visitors we had for this event was greatly reduced this year.   The event was scheduled for April 16, however, intense rain and tornado warnings on the 16th necessitated moving the event to April 17.   It was very windy and the park was very muddy.    We had 127 visitors, about 1/4 what we normally have at this event.

Day-1 (Tuesday, April 25 2011)
At 08:00pm the member of CASA | Club Astronomi Santri Assalaam (Assalaam's Students Astronomy Club),  conduct discussion about celestial object and definitions used in astronomical such as what is azimuth, horizon, distance in degree, etc. The member of CASA also introduced tools for observing the sky such telescope, binocular, and SLR (Single Lens Reflect) digital camera. We used Starry Nigth Pro 6 to simulate the sky, the celestial object, and it’s movement. The members of CASA were very exited. They got a lot of new knowledge about sky and astronomy.
