September Flashes and Shadows

Sep 20
2011

THREE FROM MOUNT WILSON…

I. 5:57 p.m.

Seeing a sundog
At mount Wilson’s gate; wanting
Others to see it.

II. 8:30 p.m.

That faint flash I saw –
Was it a quick meteor,
Or an eye problem?

III. 10:00 p.m.

Lonely nameless star
Lost in ten o’clock south sky…
Oh, yes, Fomalhaut.

The name “Fomalhaut” is from ancient Arabic, meaning “fish’s mouth.”

AS SEEN FROM BEHIND…

As seen from behind,
Dancing leaf-shadows are traced
Onto other leaves.

Onto our curtain,
Spider on the window casts
His wiggling shadow.

All of these haiku are from September 2002.  The leaf-shadows poem was written in a tiny cottonwood grove consisting of four trees next to an urban parking lot.  I was looking up toward the Sun, through the underside of a leaf.
